[fs-toc-h2]How Does the Salary Benchmarking Tool Work?

Salary is only one part of what it costs to actually hire someone for your team. Employer taxes, statutory contributions and other country-specific requirements can change the final figure significantly. This tool shows you both numbers in one place.

How to do compensation benchmarking:

  • Choose the country, role and seniority level.

  • See the salary benchmark range as conservative, target and competitive scenarios.

  • Compare the fully loaded employer cost for each scenario.

  • Open the breakdown to see gross salary, employer taxes and statutory contributions line by line.

[fs-toc-h2]Where Does the Salary Benchmarking Data Come From?

The two numbers in this cost-to-hire calculator come from two different sources, and each one is tailor-made to give you the trusted numbers you need to make better decisions for your team.

Salary benchmarks: Ravio

Ravio connects securely to the HR and payroll systems of more than 1,700 companies. The benchmarks show what those companies actually pay their people, pulled straight from the systems that run payroll. They're not job ad ranges or figures people typed into a survey.

Ravio's data science team reviews it for accuracy and outliers, and a benchmark only appears when there's enough data behind that role, level and location to make it reliable. You'll never see an individual person's salary.

Filters for Role, Region, and Industry

The employer cost calculator is based on Playroll's internal data as a leading Employer of Record. These are the same employer tax and statutory contribution rates we apply when we run payroll for employees in each country, and our in-house team keeps them up to date as local laws change. It’s the part most salary tools leave out, but it's often where hiring budgets go wrong – especially for employers hiring internationally.

For example, in many European countries, employer social security contributions add 20–30% or more on top of gross salary. A €70,000 offer can turn into a much bigger line in your budget, and that gap is exactly what the fully loaded cost shows you.

[fs-toc-h2]Why Trust Ravio Salary Data Over Glassdoor, LinkedIn or Salary Surveys?

Most free salary data tells you what someone said a role pays. Ravio's data tells you what companies are paying, taken from their payroll.

Source Where the number comes from How current it is What to watch out for
Glassdoor and similar sites Self-reported by individual employees Whenever someone submits Unverified, and skewed toward people who choose to share
LinkedIn and job ads Advertised ranges and member-submitted data Changes with each posting Advertised ranges are often wide and don't always match the final offer
Traditional salary surveys Companies submit data manually, once or twice a year Can be months old by the time it's published Costly, slow, and often out of date in fast-moving markets
Ravio (in this tool) Pulled directly from the HR and payroll systems of 1,700+ companies Updates as pay changes Only shown where there's enough data for the role, level and location

When you're making an offer to a senior engineer in Berlin or a sales lead in São Paulo, you want the number that reflects what the market is really paying this month.

[fs-toc-h2]Key Features of the Ravio & Playroll Salary Benchmarking Tool

1. Salary benchmarks from real payroll data

Salary ranges come from Ravio's compensation benchmarking data, pulled directly from the HR and payroll systems. You're comparing your offer against what companies pay, not against advertised salaries or self-reported estimates.

2. Fully loaded employer costs from Playroll

See what it would cost to employ someone at different salary points. The calculation adds the applicable employer taxes and statutory contributions to gross salary, using the rates we apply when we run payroll for international hires in that country as the Employer of Record. An expandable breakdown shows where every part of the total comes from.

Where it's supported and relevant, additional payroll or visa-related costs may be shown, or covered separately.

3. Three salary scenarios

Compare employer costs at conservative, target and competitive salary positions, so you can see how much a stronger offer adds to the total budget.

4. Country, role and seniority filters

Choose the market, job area and seniority level for your planned hire. The tool matches the Ravio benchmark to Playroll's employer-cost data for that country.

5. Country hiring guidance

Get country information and related Playroll hiring guides alongside your result, so you can go from a benchmark to a proper international hiring plan.

Salary Benchmarking Tool FAQs

01

Where does the salary data in the tool come from?

Minus IconPlus icon

The salary benchmarks come from Ravio, which connects securely to companies’ HR and payroll systems. That means you're seeing what companies actually pay for a role, not what they advertise or what employees report. A benchmark only shows when there's enough data behind the country, role and seniority level you've picked. This ensures the compensation insights you receive are accurate and up to date.

02

Is Playroll's salary benchmarking tool free to use?

Minus IconPlus icon

Yes, the tool is free for one-off salary benchmarking and cost-to-hire research, within its usage limits. You can access salary insights and compensation data for various countries without any cost, making it a valuable resource for businesses looking to make informed, budget-conscious hiring decisions globally.

Coverage depends on where Ravio's salary data and Playroll's employer-cost data overlap, in more than 40 regions. If there isn't enough reliable data for a role, level or location, the tool won't show a result rather than give you a figure you can't trust. If you don’t get the results you’re looking for, be sure to check out Playroll’s library of payroll guides. You can chat to Playroll about scaling your team or get custom benchmark estimates from Ravio.

03

Can I filter results by specific job roles or regions?
